In 2006, Elm City also had the 4th highest low-income student scores, with 71 percent of low-income students within goal range. Elements of Success Elm City College Prep is the second middle school in Connecticut run by the nonprofit organization Achievement First. The results-oriented approach to the performance of students, teachers and school leaders replicates the school culture developed at Achievement First’s Amistad Academy. As with Amistad, Elm City makes the most of a longer school day and extensive professional development for its teaching staff. Likewise, all students are evaluated every six weeks through “Interim Assessments” aligned to Connecticut’s state standards and both teachers and school leaders are assessed based on their ability to raise students scores, with performance pay tied to results. Started in 2004, Elm City is still searching for permanent site while making the most of a former parochial school building in the heart of New Haven’s historic Wooster Square. Principal Marc Michaelson and his team of teachers have quickly emerged as leaders in the development of a school environment that combines an unwavering focus on student achievement with a positive, fun school culture. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
