How to Navigate the Report Cards

Drawing on data from the Connecticut State Department of Education’s Strategic School Profiles database, the Connecticut Mastery Test (CMT) and the Connecticut Academic Performance Test (CAPT), ConnCAN rates schools based on the average percentage of students that are meeting the state goals for their grade level across the subject areas tested. This score is calculated both for the school as a whole and for specific demographic groups and, in elementary and middle schools, for the change in scores for a cohort between 2007 and 2008.

Here is a breakdown of each section:

District Screen
After choosing one of the 169 school districts from the dropdown menu, you are taken to the district screen, which provides an overview of the performance of the elementary, middle and high schools.

The default school level is elementary school. To change the school level click on one of the blue tabs labeled Elementary Schools, Middle Schools or High Schools. The default performance indicator is “Students within Goal Range.” To change the performance indicator use the dropdown menu. Schools are ordered from the highest performing at the top to the lowest performing at the bottom. To view an individual school’s report card, click on its name.

School Screen
After selecting a school, you are taken to the school screen, which provides descriptive information on the school at the top and an overview of the performance of the school for up to four indicators: Performance Gains (for elementary and middle schools only), Students within Goal Range, Subgroups within Goal Range, and Gaps between Subgroups. Below these indicators is the Details section, which contains performance data broken down by subject area and achievement gap information broken down by income, race and ethnicity.

The ten highest performing public elementary, middle and high schools in Connecticut are highlighted for each of the following performance indicators: Low Income Students within Goal Range, African Americans within Goal Range, and Hispanics within Goal Range.
