View the High School District Rankings. Connecticut’s technical high school system is leading the way in helping narrow Connecticut’s achievement gap, securing more Top 10 finishes in the ConnCAN 2007-08 High School Rankings than any district in the state. In the second annual ConnCAN rankings, Norwich Technical High School was rated most improved, Platt Technical High School and H. C. Wilcox Technical High School secured Top 10 finishes for Hispanic scores, and Oliver Wolcott Technical High School secured a Top 10 finish for low-income student scores. Connecticut’s high schools are ranked based on their results on the 2007 Connecticut Academic Performance Test (CAPT) across four categories: Most Improved, African American Scores, Hispanic Scores, and Low-Income Scores. ConnCAN’s Top 10 lists are designed to shine a spotlight on the public schools doing the most to help close Connecticut’s achievement gap. According to web traffic firm Alexa, ConnCAN’s school and district report cards were visited more often in the past year than the Connecticut State Department of Education’s official CMT and CAPT websites. ConnCAN’s high school report cards also revealed some of the largest achievement gaps ever recorded on Connecticut state achievement tests, including a 62 point achievement gap between African American and white students at Hartford’s University High School, a 58 point gap at New Haven’s Wilbur Cross High School, and a 54 point achievement gap at Greenwich High School. “These new high school rankings reveal the numerous high school success stories across our state,” said Alex Johnston, ConnCAN’s executive director. “Ensuring all high school students have access to a great public school will require a statewide push for comprehensive high school reform.” # # # For more information on the 2007-08 High School Report Cards, call Marc Porter Magee at 203-586-9313 or email Marc at marc.magee@conncan.org.
