On Parents as Partners: “We have a PTA Office right here in our building and they have free reign of the building. Parents come in, they sign in, they get their visitor’s pass and then they can roam the building all day visiting classrooms as long as they’re not disruptive. They know that they are true partners.”
On a Common Culture: “We had to get everybody on the same page toward the same, common goal, speaking the same language classroom to classroom.”
On Collaboration: “Every teacher, every grade team has common prep periods so that they can meet and then the administrators work around their schedules so that there’s a lot of team meetings.”
Ajumoke Nathan, Reading Teacher
On Building Relationships: “In my first year teaching here, I had visited all of the homes of the students before the first day of school and that made a huge difference.”
On Common Expectations: “When parents know what’s going on and what is expected of a child, you are working on two fronts—at school and at home.”
On Collaboration: “I have 45 minutes every day to collaborate with other teachers, sometimes to set up meetings with parents, or just among ourselves.”
Edward Del Signore, Science Teacher
On Clear Expectations: “We really take every little piece and really show the students what a desired behavior looks like and then we expect our students to achieve that.”
On Shared Values: “When the parents are involved, they can consistently reinforce what we are doing at home and we can consistently reinforce their family values within the classroom.”
