On Data: “I am data centered, data driven…looking at student data, knowing exactly where they are, enables us to know exactly where our instruction begins, and exactly where it has to go. And if you focus on the data, data does not lie.”
On Teachers: “Build a professional learning community where the teachers feel comfortable, are empowered, and become a team. Every teacher in this building goes far above and beyond their job description. I think it’s because they know they can. They see their beliefs are valued. And together we really do accomplish more. Teachers become the leaders they need to become.”
On Student Growth: “I think, all across the United States, changes happen over a long period of time. And the teachers here have proven that in a single year, children can go from ones to fours on a CMT test. Now, a one means ‘at basic’ and a four means ‘at goal.’ It doesn’t matter what their past was, they’ve proven that it can be done in a year.”
Dale Guerad, 5th grade teacher
On Progress: “Just by observing, recording, and collecting data as we go along, I’m really able to see the children progress through each objective….I feel very strongly that you need to take the child from where he is and bring him to where he needs to be.”
On Teamwork: “We’re all working as a team to get to that final stage where everyone can be successful. We’re able to teach the same skills because we share the same information to teach those skills…It really helps everyone out when we share our strategies, share our ideas and our materials, and support each other as we go through because I think without teamwork we are not going to get anywhere with the new goals that are put before us.”
Tricia Putnam, 5th grade teacher
On Valuing Education: “From the very first day, I let my students know how important education is to them. The knowledge they take out of my classroom is something they’re going to have for the rest of their lives.”
On Testing: “All the things they ask on the CMTs are good, high-level questioning. And that’s really what we want our students to have…Those are the type of questions we want our students to be able to answer.”
