Elements of Success Westover Elementary is a Magnet School that has drawn together students from across Stamford since 1979. Its curriculum is designed to build upon mastery of core subjects with enhanced experiences in the arts and problem solving—with the ultimate goal of encouraging higher level thinking skills. The school’s leadership team seeks to create a collaborative professional environment for teachers to come together with a common and sustained focus on raising student achievement. Westover also makes use of best practices such as frequent assessments of student learning to identify children in need of tutoring and other targeted assistance. Since 1997, Westover’s academic work has been supplemented by a Family Resource Center housed within the school and supported by the Department of Human Resources and the Department of Education. Based upon the concepts of Dr. Edward Ziegler, Director of Yale’s Bush Center for Child Development and Social Policy, the center incorporates comprehensive, community-based systems of family support and child development services into the school’s overall academic program. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
