In 2006, Jumoke also had the 2nd largest performance gains between the 4th and 5th grade (29 percentage points), the 2nd greatest improvement between 2004 and 2006 4th grade CMT results (34 percentage points), and the 4th highest low-income scores (62 percent within goal range).

Elements of Success

Over the past four years, Jumoke Academy’s CEO Dr. Michael Sharpe has made recruiting and empowering experienced teachers with a track record of classroom effectiveness his top priority. Once inside the school, teachers are supported by an intensive professional development program connected to a data-driven instruction philosophy.

Working with EASTCONN, one of the State’s Regional Education Service Centers (RESC), and Dr. James Thompson, the former Principal of Hartford’s Simpson Waverly, Dr. Sharpe and his team have recommitted Jumoke to ensuring that every child is reading, writing and performing math at grade level. Every month an academic team reviews where every child is performing in every subject and which strategies will be employed for each child in the upcoming month.

Jumoke also started a Saturday Academy program that provides its students with academic instruction from 9am to noon, with sports and other activities after studies until 3pm. During school holidays, the Jumoke team organizes activities such as field trips to keep students and their parents involved in a non-academic way, work that paid off through the year in encouraging parental involvement in the academic progress of their children.
