At a 10 p.m. press conference, Malloy told a packed room of reformers and leaders of at least one of the state’s teacher unions that the bill the Senate is expected to take up later this evening is just a beginning.

He pushed through the largest tax increase in state history after inheriting a $3 billion-plus disaster of a state budget; he was able to wring desperately needed concessions out of the state employee unions (after first failing); he instituted the “First Five” job-creation program; and won hard-fought approval for the Jackson Labs economic development project..

When will Connecticut’s teachers’ unions come clean with Connecticut’s teachers?

For six weeks now, Connecticut educators have attacked Gov. Dannel Malloy and all those who are trying to bring reform to our classrooms for being anti-teacher. The root of this attack? A new teacher evaluation system that emphasizes student learning – specifically, achievement on state exams.

As we’ve blogged about a couple of times, the Performance Evaluation Advisory Council (PEAC) has been working for more than a year to come to an agreement on a framework for an educator evaluation system. The hard work and dedication to what’s best for Connecticut’s children paid off earlier this month, when the group came together around a final set of recommendations to present to the State Board of Education (SBOE).

Today, the Performance Evaluation Advisory Council (PEAC) agreed to new guidelines for teacher evaluations, and there's some good news leading into their February 10 deadline to report recommendations to the State Board of Education: guidelines for a teacher evaluation system focused on student learning and student achievement.
