ConnCAN Policy Brief Examines Charter Laws and Funding

ConnCAN has released an in-depth policy brief on laws surrounding charter schools in Connecticut, particularly regarding Bridgeport.

Four new state charter schools were approved earlier this year by the State Board of Education, two of them in Bridgeport. Great Oaks Charter School is scheduled to open in 2014, and Capital Prep Harbor School the following year.

When the State Board of Education approved the schools, ConnCAN CEO Jennifer Alexander said this decision means “many more children across Connecticut will have access to the great education they deserve.”

“Today, fewer than half of Connecticut’s 12th graders can read at grade level, and in cities like Bridgeport, one-third of students never graduate high school,” Alexander said. “These results are unacceptable. That's why thousands of families are waiting for high quality options and it's why the State Board of Education's decision is so important. Approving these new public charter schools is a critical step toward making sure no child is unfairly denied the preparation they need for college and a good career.”
