| Free Tutoring and School Choice Info Under the federal No Child Left Behind law, all public schools in districts that accept federal Title I funds must make Adequate Yearly Progress toward the goal of having all of their students scoring “proficient” or above on state standardized tests by 2014.
Students in schools that are deemed to not be making sufficient progress toward this goal are eligible to transfer to another district public school or to a public charter school. If a school continues to not make progress a year after they have failed to make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), students who qualify for the free and reduced-price meal program are eligible for free tutoring and other Supplemental Educational Services (SES) paid for through the federal Title I funds. To find out if your child qualifies for school choice or free tutoring, contact Christine Ruman, Program Manager for Public School Choice and Supplemental Educational Services at the Connecticut State Department of Education's Bureau of Curriculum and Instruction.
